High sticking with Kelly...
This guy knows his business...no doubt about it. This is also one of my favorite techniques...Enjoy.
Oh, and it is on my beloved Madison River, of course!!
RD Awesome clip, high sticking is something I started doing late this fall. I did find out that you need at least a 9 ft. rod or longer as Kelly is using. I like this technique because you are in constant contact with the fly. I got Nymphing by Numbers by Kelly Galloup for Christmas and have learned much more about how to really be effected with different nymphing techniques. I will have to put this clip in my Utube favorties, thanks for sharing
Hey Bill ~ How are you doing? Yes, this definitely requires a 9-11 ft rod for the best success. I have used the 9, but still get a tired arm with stretching it out with my czech nymphs...so, a little late Christmas gift should be coming in the mail very shortly!! : )
Thanks for sharing this video with all, Kelly has so much knowledge about fishing and I like how he uses a variety of techniques to catch fish with a fly. I have used a sort of high stick variation on the small streams of AZ, it can be very effective. Keep the good stuff coming.
A very good visual on how to properly do it. I've got my eye on a section of the upper part of the South Fork of the American River I'd like to try that on. Going to have to wait until Spring though.
TR ~ When I met Kelly a few years ago, he drew me a map of where I should fish on the Maddy...it was golden! And yes, he definitely has the proven techniques that work.
Hi Emily. The thing about the American is that you can fish it right through town or one of the forks up in the mountains. The American runs from Nimbus Dam in Folsom to where it meets the Sacramento River right in downtown Sacramento. That is where we fish Steelhead in the winter and Shad in the summer. Up the hill it turns into those streams you like, all the way to the top of the Sierras. North Fork runs toward Donner Summit on Highway 80. Middle Fork runs through Coloma where gold was originally discovered. South Fork runs along Highway 50 to Echo Summit on the way to South Lake Tahoe. All good places to fish.

ReplyDeleteMark ~ Gosh, I don't think that I lived too far away from the American River being in Sacramento...am I right?

Mark ~ It's been over twenty years since I lived there, but now I am remembering as we lived near Folsom. Dang...I didn't fish back then...too bad!
ReplyDeleteNice video...maybe I can give this a try if I can force myself to take out a 9' rod.
